Week of 1/6/20 Mon - Welcome to Honors Chem-is-try!!! This is a fun yet challenging course and we will hit the ground running. Today we are going over safety protocols and on Weds you will have a 10? MC quiz over what we have covered. HERE is the safety contract. We will also start learning the 40 elements you are responsible for memorizing (name and symbol) #1-36, Ag, Sn, Au, Pb which you will be quizzed on Mon 1/13. HERE is a quizlet to help you learn them. HERE is the periodic table you received today.
Tues - Go over basics of atomic structure and go over atomic history. We watched the History video below. We worked on THIS worksheet (just the inside the atom side) and reviewed for the safety quiz (tomorrow). For HW, make sure you are learning your elements! 1-36, Sn, Au, Ag, Pb
Weds - Safety Quiz and for 1st - school-wide guest speaker. Work on memorizing elements. 3rd block -I am a part of a really cool NASA program and you will be doing some activities I have learned from them. We will be taking a quick ZERO pressure pretest so I know what you already know about the stuff I will share from my NASA experience. The content ties in perfectly with Unit 1 of chem :)
Thurs - 1st took the safety quiz. We did a Pennium Lab to learn about isotopes and average atomic mass. For HW make sure to complete some of the practice problems you received on Tues. Also make sure to work on memorizing your elements! Element Quiz Monday, Atoms quiz Wednesday
Fri - Go back over all we have learned so far. Recap average atomic mass. Learn how to do electron configurations. HERE is the ppt we used to lean how. Here is the worksheet. We will be doing a really great lab next week but you must have your signed safety contract submitted. Get it in ASAP! Week of 1/12/2020 Mon - Elements quiz then more practice with atomic mass and electron configuration. We also reviewed the atomic history notes. You should be totally good with the parts of an atom and ion, the 6 dead dudes of science who came up with atomic models, and atomic mass. Quiz Weds. I will check the worksheets Inside the Atom and Average Atomic Mass for a grade.
You are responsible for working on learning electron configuration if you are confused. Watch the video below, look at the ppt, google and watch videos showing how to do it. Find something that works for YOU! Electron Quiz on Friday! Unit 1 test NEXT Friday, 1/24.
Tues - We will work on Bohr models and ions. We will also make sure everyone is good with orbitals. We may learn how to light Bunsen burners today in preparation for a lab on Thursday.
Weds - Atoms Quiz - Know how to do the Inside the Atom and Average Atomic Mass worksheets. Know the 6 dead dudes of science and what their models were and what is good and what is bad about them. Start the Energy and Light Pogil in preparation for tomorrow's lab.
Thurs - Flame Test Lab - MUST HAVE SAFETY CONTRACT TURNED IN
Fri - Pep Rally Day - Electron Quiz - Know how to do long and short configurations, Bohr model, and orbital diagrams. Finish Pogil from Weds for HW and do the CER for Monday. 3rd block will do some of my NASA activities.
Week of 1/20/20 HERE is a study guide for the Unit 1 Test Fri 1/24 Mon - NO SCHOOL Tues - Start going over periodic trends. We looked at valence electrons, periods and groups, and atomic radii. We did a demo putting the alkali metals in water. We also did a CER for the way we can use light and colors to determine which element we have. This should be finished for tomorrow if you did not finish in class. We will go over the electron quiz if we have time. If not, we will do it tomorrow.
Weds - Go over CER. We will look at more periodic trends - electronegativity, and ionization energy. We may start to review.
Thurs - Review for Unit 1 Test HERE is a study guide for the Unit 1 Test Fri 1/24 HERE is the link to the Quizizz. You will want your periodic table while playing. Remember the timer is off so you do not earn extra points for answering quickly.
Fri - Unit 1 Test
Below are a bunch of videos that may help you better understand the concepts we are going over. If you miss class, you should look above and see what topic we covered then see if there is a related video below to watch.
